The Lost Art of Listening: Rediscovering True EVP Methodology

By Todd Bates | EVP Explorations

In today’s paranormal field, technology often overshadows technique. Everyone seems to be chasing the next gadget, app, or device that promises to “talk to spirits,” yet few are truly listening. The discipline of Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) research was never about the latest gear—it was, and still is, about the method. And that method begins with patience, control, and the art of critical listening.

Back to the Beginning

When I first started studying EVP under the influence of pioneers like Sarah Estep and Jason Snider, the process was deliberate. You didn’t just hit record and hope for magic. You set the stage, controlled your environment, and treated every recording session as an experiment.

There were baselines, ambient readings, and attention to acoustics. You logged times, locations, and environmental factors. You recorded in silence, not chaos. In short—EVP research was respected as a study, not a spectacle.

Today, I see a field overrun by shortcuts. Investigators rely on phone apps and spirit boxes, often unaware that most of what they’re hearing is nothing more than audio pareidolia—the mind interpreting random noise as speech. If we want progress, we have to slow down, return to fundamentals, and re-learn how to listen.

The Role of the Baseline

Before every EVP session, a baseline recording should be established. This is your control sample—your quiet period that captures the natural sounds of your environment before any questions are asked.

Listen for the hum of an HVAC unit, the faint tick of a clock, or distant traffic. These subtle noises can later mimic or mask genuine anomalies. Without a baseline, you have no context for what’s “normal” in that space.

Too often, investigators skip this step entirely, and as a result, spend hours chasing sounds that were part of the environment all along. True EVP analysis requires evidence to be isolated from assumption.

Analog vs. Digital: Why Both Still Matter

The debate over analog versus digital recording continues, but here’s the truth: both formats have value when used correctly.

Analog tape recorders, with their natural imperfections and magnetic tape noise, can sometimes reveal characteristics of EVP that digital recorders miss—especially in the lower frequency ranges. However, digital recorders offer clarity, ease of analysis, and less susceptibility to physical noise contamination.

The key isn’t to favor one over the other—it’s to understand how each responds to your environment. Analog is art. Digital is precision. Together, they offer a complete view of the soundscape.

Session Control: Less Is More

Many believe more equipment equals better results. It doesn’t. Overloading a room with multiple devices creates interference and chaos. The most credible EVP sessions are often the simplest ones.

Set one primary recorder, one external microphone if needed, and limit movement. Eliminate anything that could produce false positives—phones, watches, metal objects, and other electronics. Conduct your session with discipline. Ask your questions clearly and then remain silent.

The silence is where the evidence lives.

The Art of Analysis

Once the session is complete, the real work begins. Analyzing EVP isn’t about filtering everything to perfection. In fact, overuse of noise reduction tools can destroy legitimate data.

I tell my students and followers often: you cannot create a Class A EVP by removing noise. You can only make what’s there easier to hear. Always preserve your original audio, work from copies, and take notes on every adjustment you make.

Above all, let multiple trained ears review the same segment. Consensus strengthens credibility.

Ethics and Integrity in the Field

EVP research demands honesty—both with your evidence and yourself. If you’re unsure about what you’ve captured, say so. There is no shame in “unconfirmed.”

Faking or over-interpreting evidence not only damages your reputation—it harms the entire community. EVP Explorations was founded on the belief that truth should always outweigh entertainment. The goal isn’t to prove the afterlife; it’s to understand the phenomenon through careful, repeatable study.

A Call to the Next Generation

If you’re new to this field, I invite you to slow down. Step away from the apps, learn the history, and train your ear. Study old analog methods and blend them with today’s technology responsibly.

We owe it to the pioneers—and to the phenomenon itself—to approach this work with respect, patience, and purpose.

Because the greatest discoveries don’t come from noise—they come from listening.
